Bill Baker (Matt Damon) is a rugged worker on an oil rig in the United States who travels to Marseille. To visit his daughter, who is imprisoned for a murder she claims she didn’t commit.

Outside of his familiar surroundings, circumstances become extremely challenging for a father determined. To do whatever it takes to prove his daughter’s innocence.

Bill Baker (Matt Damon), a worker on an oil rig in Oklahoma, travels to France to visit his daughter. Allison (Abigail Breslin), who is imprisoned.

Allison went abroad during her studies and was accused of murder when her girlfriend Lina was found dead. The press vehemently blamed her, but Allison and Bill believe in her innocence.

Allison has obtained a lead on Akim, the man who was with her the night of the murder. And asks Bill to take her to her lawyer. When her lawyer refuses the case. Bill decides to investigate on his own with the help of a local woman named Virginie (Camille Cottin).

He eventually manages to locate Akim but loses sight of him. Allison distances herself from him, but Bill decides to stay in France. And begins living with Virginie and her daughter Maya. Whom he cares for and with whom he develops a strong bond.

Over time, Bill and Virginie admit their mutual feelings, and the three start living as a kind of family.

One day, while taking Maya to a soccer game, Bill sees Akim in the crowd and follows him. He kidnaps him and hands over a lock of hair to a private detective. To compare with the DNA found at the crime scene.

Akim reveals that Allison paid him to get rid of Lina with a necklace called «Stillwater.» The private detective informs the police, who come to search the basement. But Virginie discovers the truth and releases Akim before his arrest.

Realizing the situation, Virginie asks Bill to leave and tearfully says goodbye to Maya.

Bill confesses his love to her, and they both sit on the porch. Allison remarks that she can’t believe everything is the same as before. She asks Bill if he agrees, and he responds that he doesn’t. That now everything seems completely different.
